The Canadian company Red Moon Resources has restarted operations at Flat Bay Mine in St. George, Newfoundland. The mine is now shipping gypsum ore for the first time in 28 years.
The mine had been closed since 1990. The CEO of Red Moon Resources cited the availability of synthetic gypsum in the 1990s as one of the main factors that led to the mine’s closure. But now, with the diminishing reliance on coal for energy generation, demand for natural gypsum is growing.
